Motivational Interviewing Design Research

My Role: User Researcher, UI/UX Designer

User Study Analysis

This project explored design opportunities that facilitated motivational interviewing (MI) learning for novices through literature reviews and user studies.

Literature Reviews

First, I did literature reviews on learning to help me brainstorm ideas. Then, I summarized some research studies and their implications on designing tools to facilitate MI learning.

Brainstorming

Then, I started brainstorming ideas for the app. I dived into both personal learning in the form of lightweight daily tasks and community learning that incorporated gaming and community sharing.

User Interviews

User Study Analysis

A few other students in my lab are also tackling the same problem space. Hence, as a group, we interviewed both MI trainers and trainees on their opinions of our collected ideas. We received lots of positive feedback on lightweight daily tasks, goal-setting, community sharing, and aggregated response from community, which validated my design direction.

Prototyping

Low-Fi Prototype

According to the feedback, I made a low-fi wireframe incorporating lightweight daily tasks, goal setting, progress tracking, and aggregated response from community.

Reflection

Low-Fi Prototype

This project allowed me to see the empirical and theoretical side of design. Exploring design ideas through literature reviews was a new experience for me. Having theoretical support to back up my design definitely gave me more confidence in further investment.
